“The concept of creating beauty is inseparable from that of creating art. It is from artistic conviction that beauty emerges.”
Gina Brooke is recognized as one of the leading creative talents in the beauty industry today. With more than twenty years of experience as an internationally acclaimed makeup artist and beauty expert, Gina Brooke is the force behind some of the most memorable editorial, media and red-carpet moments, and the development of numerous award-winning beauty products. Brooke’s work has set some of the biggest beauty trends of the past decade – ironic, given her personal beauty philosophy:
“I don’t believe in trends,” says Brooke. “I believe in expressing one’s individuality through makeup.”
Brooke’s love of art, photography and design, fostered during her studies at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, is a defining influence on her work. This, combined with her innate sense of creativity, enables her to look past the trends and bring fresh ideas to her many roles. While known for her outstanding skill as a makeup artist and her work with some of the world’s most iconic faces, Brooke is increasingly channeling her expertise and artistry into collaborations with international beauty brands. Her vision and beauty philosophy are evident in the groundbreaking products she creates in her roles as Artistic Director and Global Beauty Consultant.
Brooke’s dynamic approach to beauty and emphasis on individuality quickly attracted attention. In 2004, Brooke began working with Madonna, who charged Brooke with the creation of the makeup looks for her Re-Invention Tour. This led Brooke to create an exclusive pair of custom lashes with cosmetics icon Shu Uemura, which set off an explosion of interest in false lashes and one of the biggest trends of the decade.
In 2005, Brooke once again applied her artistic vision to her well-documented love of lashes when she created a now-iconic diamond lash set for one of her notable clients. The design was sold exclusively by Neiman Marcus for a record-breaking $10,000 per pair, making them the world’s most expensive lashes – and the most talked about. They were covered by every major fashion and beauty publication worldwide, establishing L’Oréal’s Shu Uemura brand as the global authority in lashes. Brooke was subsequently appointed Artistic Director of Shu Uemura from 2005 – 2010.
Brooke has also been vocal in her belief that beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin. This led her, after years spent researching innovative skincare products, to the Australian brand Intraceuticals. Brooke has served as Global Brand Ambassador of Intraceuticals since 2010 and has used her influence to bring awareness to the brand. Providing an Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial prior to applying makeup has become a signature part of Brooke’s process with each of her clients.
Following her role as Artistic Director at Shu Uemura, Brooke was signed onto Hourglass Cosmetics, to which she served as Artistic Director from 2010-12.
Brooke became an international trendsetter yet again in 2012 when she brought her concept for the perfect red lip shade to LVMH’s Make Up For Ever brand. Together, they created a collection of waterproof lipsticks. Such was Brooke’s impact that the industry reported an enormous rise in the sale of red lipsticks worldwide in 2012-13.
In 2014, Brooke was appointed Global Cosmetic Consultant to the top-selling brand at Sephora worldwide, L’Oréal Group’s Urban Decay.
Gina Brooke may be regarded as one of the beauty industry’s greatest artists, but as her influence grows, she is focusing even more on collaborating with a number of brands in the beauty arena. By bringing awareness and her creative vision to companies ranging from international conglomerates to small niche brands, Brooke is an asset for those looking to nurture a distinct voice and develop innovative product in a highly competitive market.
“There are no rules to makeup,” says Brooke. “With makeup, the possibilities are endless.”
Gina Brooke has now collaborated on five of Madonna’s world concert tours and numerous videos, including “Hung Up,” for which she was awarded the coveted MVPA Award for Best Makeup. Her work has graced the pages of Vogue, Vogue Italia, W, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Allure, InStyle, Rolling Stone, Elle, Marie Claire, Glamour, Interview, Numero, V Magazine and Cosmopolitan and GQ.
